0, 1, 2, 3, 1, 0 is an amazingly shot, 10 minute short film from writer, producer and director, Dick Jane. The film tells the story of a widow who, overcome by grief and loneliness on the anniversary of her husband’s murder at the hands of his mistress, succumbs to the dark forces around her.
The film starts off with the spoken words ‘Read the writing of shit on the wall’, followed by a gun shot and soft piano music as we gaze upon three bullets on a dinner plate, a clock ticking and then off a ladies hand pointing to the floor as blood trickles down it. The film quickly changes direction by playing in reverse as we see the events which led to this sorry turn of events.
The film is subtitled throughout where necessary, but it’s the imagery that will captivate you… so angry, full of hurt, yet strangely beautiful at the same time.
Themes of a sexual nature are encountered and there’s lots of symbolic imagery used to mimic this. Relationships are looked at with the two opposing ideas regarding sex – relationships built soley upon the pleasure of intercourse and those with sex as a way of consummating their love for one another. Flashbacks are used to give a glimpse as to the nature of her husband’s past, with the narrator speaking insightful comments on how this relationship turned sour.
This film is very strong in it’s imagery and sound, each walking hand in hand, as rhythmic as a heartbeat. The shots are breathtaking and lots of symbolism is used throughout. Clearly the director Dick Jane knows what he wants out of a film and knows exactly how the story should be told. Dick has an artistic vision and I’m looking forward to seeing more from this director.
