Fringe Season 4 Episode 3 “Alone in the World” (Contains Plot Spoilers)

(SPOILERS)

Episode 3 ‘Alone in the World’ kicks off with Walter having a psychiatric evaluation from his old doctor from the mental institution due to his anxious state of mind. We all know that Peter is trying to make contact with him, but Walter doesn’t remember Peter as a man, so clearly he thinks he’s going mad!!! However, the doctor keeps asking questions, believing that he is better off back at the asylum, that all the voices and images are in his head!!! Doctor’s!! What do they know eh??? During the time that Walter is being assessed by the doctor, an image of Peter’s face appears on the back of the doctors shiny clipboard, however, Walter  manages not to react, and the is doctor totally unaware.

The episode then moves on to the main story with some bullies chasing a boy. The boy leads them into a sort of a cave like hideout and the bullies think they have the boy trapped, but all of a sudden a black like fungus weed thingy starts to crawl up their skin, almost suffocating them, and they die! Nice! The boy flees the scene before anyone arrives!! The Fringe team arrive on scene, at which point the bullies bodies have totally decomposed even though they have only been dead a day or so! Olivia and Lincoln spot other footprints that have led out of the cave, coming to the conclusion that there was another boy who managed to get away!!! Eventually they find the boy, Aaron, at the school where the bullies went to, and have a little chat with him, and Aaron is then sent to Walter’s lab, so Walter can give him a check up!

At this point, one of the decomposed bodies has gone to Walter for examination, however, he gets distressed as he wanted both bodies to examine, and asks that the other body (on its way to the morgue) is sent to him immediately.

Aaron arrives at Walter’s lab, and it would appear that Aaron has not been affected by the fungus weed thingy, and after a little chat with Walter, it becomes apparent that the boy is very alone, with his father no longer alive, and his mother constantly working away from home. Walter and Aaron very quickly share a likeness in their loneliness and Walter recounts losing Peter when he was a child. This is the first time that Walter has spoken about Peter properly in the series and remembers his death as drowning. If you remember from a previous series, we found out that the observer September  saved Peter from drowning, pullin g him out of the pond. The observer, in doing this, changed the balance of things, and we start to see how much influence the observers have!

Then something weird starts happening with the dead body, and this fungus all over the body appears to be breathing!!!! Walter has a brainwave and quickly gets Astrid to help him get the body into a contained box, just in time as the body explodes!!!!! He quickly gets Astrid to contact Olivia and Lincoln as they are on their way to the morgue to pick up the other body. Even though Astrid gets hold of them in time, they are too late to warn the morticians, as the other body explodes and the fungus attacks  them!! Once the morgue is contained, Olivia and Lincoln go in to examine and they notice that the fungus is growing and moving towards the drains!!

Walter comes up with a way to destroy the fungus by shining an ultra voliet light on it, and the Fringe Team proceeds to kill the fungus, runnin g against time as it grows quickly and attacks another couple of people.

When they start shining the ultra violet light on the fungus, Astrid and Walter notice that it is affecting Aaron, and Walter concludes that Aaron and the fungus have made a connection and Aaron’s mind and the fungus are now linked. Walter tells a frustrated Olivia to hold off until he can find a way to disconnect the two, believing the only way forward is to perform a lobotomy on the boy. Walter becomes very distressed as he racks his brain for a way forward other than the lobotomy and he then has an idea. Walter talks to Aaron about the connection and it becomes apparent that its not the fungus holding onto Aaron, but Aaron holiding onto the fungus in his mind, not wanting to let go as he sees it as the only friend and company he has. The fungus appears to have developed a sort of brain, creating a network allowing it to grow and grow, consequently communicating with the boy to lure in victims in order for it to become stronger. Only though strong persuasion from Walter does Aaron finally let go of it in his mind, and Olivia is given the go ahead to destroy the fungus!!!!

As they proceed, the fungus attacks and kills one of the team, and then attacks Lincoln. But eventually the compound put together to destroy the fungus by Walter starts to take effect, and the fungus starts to die. Phew!!!

Well, back to the Peter situation, at the end of the episode, Olivia walks into Walter’s lab, only to find him attempting to perform a lobotomy on himself!!!!! Walter tells Olivia that he thinks he’s going mad, and that he keeps seeing a man. Olivia produces a sketch of a man she has drawn herself, someone she keeps seeing in her dreams and, yes you’ve guessed it, it’s Peter!!! Yay!!! It’s starting to move somewhere finally!! Earlier in the episode, we see Olivia searching for someone on the FBI database, but coming up with nothing!! Walter comes to the conclusion that he is now obviously real and trying to make contact, and they agree to try to find out his identity!! Roll on the next episode!!
