Yes, if you want further proof (as if you needed any after the blistering trailers and clips) of just how good Gareth Evans’ action epic The Raid actually is, then check out just how confident some companies are. The word is that both Sony and Alliance/Momentum have already pre-bought the sequel a sequel, even though the first film is yet to get a general release. The Raid has made a stunning impact on the US festival circuit, and will make its debut here in the UK at the Film Four Frightfest on 25th February.
I have no doubt that the film will more than live up to expectations, and clearly both Sony and Alliance/Momentum feel the same. Evans is due to also direct the sequel, titled Berandal, and The Raid star Iko Uwais will be returning. Production is expected to begin as soon as both director and star are ready. Here is the official word so far:
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has pre-bought U.S., Latin American and Spanish rights to the upcoming sequel to Indonesian action feature The Raid… Alliance/Momentum has pre-bought for the United Kingdom and Canada; Koch Media has acquired the film for German speaking territories; Korea Screen has pre-bought Korea; and HGC has pre-bought China. Deals for other major territories are currently in negotiations.
