Oh dear, just what went wrong with this film? I was mildly looking forward to Seance: The Summoning, mainly due to the fact I do enjoy a bit of spiritual horror and possession, however I was not expecting this film to be quite as pointless as this. Sadly, there is very little to talk about because not very much happens in the film, and by the time it finished I instantly forgot most of it.
The films premise is that four friends go to a city Morgue to perform a séance, and they are doing this to prove to one of the guys that these things do work, and that there IS an afterlife. One of the guys works at the Morgue as a security guard, so he is able to sneak his friends in and the séance can begin. As with all horror films, things go bad, however they don’t just go bad for the friends performing the ritual, it also goes bad for the film in general.
The build up is not all that bad, and the plot does become rather intriguing and the idea of holding a séance in a Morgue is quite cool. However, a painfully poor script leads the already not very good actors to be even worse. Lines are delivered forced and most of it becomes laughable, and don’t even get me started on when one of the group becomes possessed! Oh my, some of the crap that comes out of the mouth of a man possessed by a spirit is just awful. You can clearly see that writer and director Alex Wright wanted to make an interesting movie, but sadly he seems way out of his league, and much of the film is so stupid that even if you really tried to enjoy it, you probably couldn’t.
Wright even finds time to go down the Hostel route as the possessed is tied to a chair and the group begin to torture him. It’s crazy, and so horrifically bad that I felt more pain watching the film than what the poor possessed fella felt. I have seen my fair share of crap horror, and I don’t mind the bad stuff so long as it is happy to be bad and doesn’t try and prove otherwise. Seance thinks it is clever, it thinks it is good, and it isn’t. It is not scary in the slightest, and even when Mr Possessed man tries to have his wicked way with one of the girls, you will find yourself giggling rather than being shocked. An epic fail in every sense of the word.
