THE EXPENDABROS
Available for free on Steam

A standalone platformer spinoff of Broforce, The Expendabros is a free to play game, available on Steam, that ties in with the new movie, The Expendables 3, which hits UK cinemas on 14th August 2014.

The Expendabros keeps things simple when it comes to its gameplay. You play as one of many mercenaries who must defeat Mel Gibson’s terrorist henchmen and reach the end of the mission (level) where a helicopter will come and collect you. The object of the game is to complete the missions, of which there are ten in total, in the fastest time possible and kill as many of the bad guys as you can.

Throughout the game, the player will have the opportunity to rescue caged comrades. Rescuing them will change your player into a new character who has their own unique weapon. As far as I’m aware, you have no choice which character you become, nor can you freely change characters. The only time your character will change is if you rescue a comrade or if you die. But what a great set of characters they are. As a spin-off set around the movie, the characters you become are those of the new The Expendables 3 film, so you’ll be able to kick back and blow shit up as Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Wesley Snipes, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Sly and big Arnie! Your current character’s face appears at the bottom left side of the screen. Watch with glee as the faces develop a devilish grin when creating havoc and blowing up the bad guys.

The comical enemies of the game are assorted types which spice up the gameplay. You have your standard armed henchmen, heavies, suicide bombers and even a parachute division, which float down at all angles. The varied enemies will keep you on your toes and make you even more trigger-happy in order to wipe them out before they have a chance to get you.

Like all good games, there are boss levels and The Expendabros is no exception. Around level 5 of the 10 levels, there’s a giant tank with rockets and guns that does a hell of a lot of damage and, as of yet, I’ve been unable to make my way past it. Let’s call it a work in progress as this addictive free game has me eager to play at every opportunity.

An interesting aspect of the game is the ability to cut into the environment with your character’s weapon. This allows the player to create shortcuts and paths under and around the enemies. Although, due to the weapon’s indiscriminate destructive nature, you may end up blowing up some block of the environment you need to reach other platforms.

This game is an absolute hoot! The Expendabros is brainless fun, where the only buttons really needed are the right trigger (if using an Xbox for Windows controller) to fire the weapon and A button to jump. Coupled with the joystick toggles to send your character in the right direction, this is as simple as you like but it works so incredibly well! After my brain was about to melt after a hard day’s work, a twenty minute game of The Expendabros let me blow off some steam in a shoot-em-up, blood-splattered fashion and boy, it felt good!

Bags of fun with an infectious energy that just radiates from the gameplay, The Expendabros is a game you must check out! If you like what you see, go full hog and check out the full version, daddy of the game, Broforce.

I love practical effects, stop-motion animation and gore, but most of all I love a good story! I adore B-movies and exploitation films in many of their guises and also have a soft spot for creature features. I review a wide range of media including movies, TV series, books and videogames. I'm a massive fan of author Hunter S. Thompson and I enjoy various genre of videogames with Kingdom Hearts and Harvest Moon two of my all time favs. Currently playing: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Yakuza Zero and Mafia III.
