Interview With Hillbilly Horror Show’s Bo Keister

Bo Keister is the host of web series Hillbilly Horror Show, which features short movies from up and coming filmmakers, and in this interview, Bo talks about his favourite horrors and how the show has evolved over four volumes.

What was the first horror flick you ever saw, Bo?
It was “Nightmare on Elm Street”. A friend of mine had HBO at his house, so we crashed out in his basement and watched it. Not sure we got a lot of sleep that night. It freaked us out pretty good!

What would you say is the scariest one you’ve seen?
Hmm…that’s a little tougher. I think there are several that have scared me over the years for different reasons.

I absolutely despise clowns, because of “It”. “Cujo” didn’t do me any favours either, considering my neighbour had a St. Bernard. Also, “Night of the Demons” was one I remember scaring the hell out of me when I was younger.

Has your life been leading to this – hosting a web series that serves as a love letter to horror films?
In many ways, I’d have to say, yes. Most of my formative years revolved around watching horror films with friends. We couldn’t get enough of them.
Professionally, when I started out, it wasn’t exactly a conscious decision to go into the horror genre. Instead, I just kind of fell into those roles easily, and always seem to book those parts.

As for Hillbilly Horror Show, it’s a thrill to be part of it. I was a huge TALES FROM THE CRYPT fan, and being part of a series that sort of resurrects that part of the horror genre is exciting! I’m just really proud of what we’re doing, and the fans are responding well to what we’ve presented.

Who decides which shorts make the cut?
Everyone involved with the series actively seeks out great films. We scour the internet, film fests, and we reach out to filmmakers we know asking to see their work. Once we receive a submission, we put it out to our folks for feedback and then Blu & I usually make the final decision, based on everyone’s input.

Our real purpose is to find great films, that might get missed or overlooked by the fans, and put them in the spotlight. So far, we’ve found some amazing content!

Where should readers send their movies to?
The best way is to send us an online screener link to hillbillyhorrorshow@gmail.com. However, if they only have a hard copy screener, all they need to do is contact us and we’ll provide a mailing address. Regardless, if you’ve got a great horror short, we want to see it!

How has the show evolved over the four volumes?
As for content, I think the films we present in each volume are all strong. Where the real evolution has occurred is in the cast chemistry, and the chemistry with our crew. We’ve really found a rhythm and I think you can see that in the later volumes.

What are you favorite moments of the Vol 1 DVD?
There’s so much to love in Hillbilly Horror Show Volume 1. Scott & I have some really funny moments throughout, but the real stars for me are the films!

There are just so many strong entries in this volume. FRANKY AND THE ANT has won, and continues to win, awards at every turn; and when you watch it, you can easily see why. DOPPELGANGER takes you back to the Harryhausen style, while AMUSED brings some light-hearted zombie humour into the mix. Then, THE NEST closes the volume out in just amazing fashion. The CGI is going to blow people away.

Lastly, there’s Lulu! I think it’s pretty clear that Rachel steals the show with both her antics and her outfits!

And finally, can we have Cousin Lulu’s number?
Sure, it’s 1-900….oh, uh…
You should probably ask Lulu on that one!
