While we all prepare to suffer Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters film, there is hope on the horizon courtesy of Sony Pictures, and a rumour which appears to be coming true.
When Feig announced his film last year, Sony also revealed possible plans for a male-lead Ghostbusters film, with plans for Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum to possibly star. This is so much more exciting than Feig’s film, but it was just an idea at the time.
Pratt was asked about his involvement and subsequently denied any knowledge. The Sony idea appeared to be simply a rumour, a glimmer of hope for fans. Cut to this week, and screenwriter Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation) may have lifted the lid on Sony’s plans, even though nothing is set in stone yet.
In an interview with MTV, Pearce revealed that he had written a script for the new Ghostbusters film for Sony:
“I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks. Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are doing Civil War at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!”
As pointed out in the above statement, it is also rumoured that Anthony and Joe Russo will be directing, which is great news if it happens.
The rumours of Pratt and Tatum leading the cast (which again is terrific news) was also addressed by Pearce:
“That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project. Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.”
There has also been talk of this particular Ghostbusters film joining with Feig’s film (please no!), and initial reports claimed this would be the second Ghostbuters film (Sony are planning four), which would not follow on from Feig’s, but connect to it somehow. Pearce confirmed that this, and Feig’s film, exist in the same universe:
“My personal inclination is to try and make everything occur in the same Ghostbusters universe, because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want. Here in New York, you just wanna tie it all together. Whether that happens or not we’ll see, but I’ve certainly given them the tools to do that, I hope.”
Things are still in the planning stages, and Pearce made it clear he had written a script for something Sony might do, but have not yet confirmed. The other issue is that Pratt is so in demand at the moment, and with Jurassic World 2 confirmed AND Indiana Jones, its whether Sony could actually get him.
This is all hearsay for now, and as Pearce said, things will become clear next year.
