Back in May it was reported that TOHO studios, who own the rights to Godzilla, were suing Nacho Vigalondo and Voltage Pictures for their upcoming film Colossal. The reason? It was far too similar to Godzilla.
The original plot synopsis for the film talked about a giant lizard destroying Tokyo, and that Anne Hathaway’s character would have some sort of connection with the beast. Even the promotional posters featured images of Godzilla, so naturally TOHO were not impressed.
Since then Voltage Pictures changed the synopsis for the film to read as follows:
Gloria (Hathaway; pictured) is an ordinary woman who finds herself in an extraordinary circumstance. Tokyo is under attack by a giant robot, and for some strange reason, Gloria is the only person who can stop it. In order to do so, Gloria needs to figure out why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
It seemed that the giant monster angle had been removed due to TOHO’s request, but now a new synopsis have surfaced on the Voltage Pictures website, confirming that the film WILL feature a giant Godzilla-like lizard.
The new synopsis is almost identical to the original one put out a few months ago, and this is how it reads:
Hathaway will be playing Gloria in the picture, an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her home town. When news reports start surfacing that a giant monster is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is connected to these far-off events. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
So does this mean that Voltage Pictures and Toho have come to an agreement? Who knows, but what is exciting is the fact that as of now, it appears that Colossal will feature a giant lizard, and the highly talented Vigalondo will get to make a monster movie, and I can only dream of just how good he could make it.
Colossal is going to be huge!
