It was almost a year ago that Tommy Wirkola, writer and director of the extremely fun Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, announced that he had completed the script for the sequel. It was handed in to Paramount, and since then nothing has been heard.
The Tracking Board report that a director has been found for the next installment, and that director is Bruno Aveillan. Who he I here you ask. Well, he’s a French director, said to be renowned, and has directed one short called The Farmer Project.
Per The Tracking Board:
The sequel, which was rumored to be in jeopardy after the first film’s director Tommy Wirkola announced that he would not be returning, is being reworked with a new take from Aveillan. A source close to the project has informed the site that Paramount is looking to pump a little more excitement into the franchise, already searching for a new scribe to rewrite Wirkola’s script. Specific plots details are kept mum, though the story will once again follow witch-hunting warriors Hansel and Gretel who must take up arms to vanquish an even greater threat.
Beau Flynn is returning to produce via his Flynn Picture Co, along with Kevin Messick, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay through their Gary Sanchez Productions banner. Ashley Brucks, Gabby Canton, and Elizabeth Raposo will oversee for Paramount.
There’s no word yet whether Jeremy Renner or Gemma Arterton will return.
