We recently found out that Ridley Scott is planning on starting production on his long gestating sequel, Prometheus 2, in January next year. This sort of put a spanner in the works for Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5, which was due to also go into production soon, and there was talk of both Alien 5 and Prometheus 2 being released in the same year.
A source for Bloody Disgusting claims that while both projects are with Fox, the studio is giving priority to Scott’s Prometheus 2, and once this is complete, Blomkamp can begin work on Alien 5:
“Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea. Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.” said the tipster.
I am excited about both films, but with Scott producing Alien 5 as well as directing Prometheus 2, you can understand why Fox would give his directing job priority. Besides, it also gives Blomkamp the time he needs to perfect his Alien 5 script, and also frees up Sigourney Weaver for the film (she would have hopefully completed the Avatar sequels by then).
It has been rumoured now that Alien 5 will go into production in 2017, eyeing a 2018 release. Prometheus 2 should be released in 2017.
