Win THE NIGHTMARE on DVD In Our Competition

the-nightmare-comp

A documentary-horror film exploring the phenomenon of ‘Sleep Paralysis’ through the eyes of eight very different people. These people (and a shockingly large number of others) often find themselves trapped between the sleeping and waking worlds, helpless, totally unable to move but aware of their surroundings while being subject to frequently disturbing sights and sounds.

A strange element to these visions is that despite the fact that they know nothing of one another, (and had never heard of sleep paralysis before it happened to them), many see similar ghostly ‘shadow men.’ This is one of many reasons many people insist this is more than just a sleep disorder.

THE NIGHTMARE digs deep into not only the particulars of these eight people’s uncanny experiences (through elaborate, sometimes surreal dramatisations), but it also explores their search to understand what they’ve gone through and how it’s changed their lives.

The Nightmare is out on DVD and download 26th October. Courtesy of Altitude Film Entertainment, we have a DVD copy to give away.

  1. i used to dream gloved hands lived behind the radiator and they came out like spiders to strangle me, I swear my brain is not wired right to dream that stuff

  2. Just one?! I used to regularly have nightmares that Freddie was chasing me. Freddie and the main guy from toxic crusaders. Freddie wouldchase me to the edge of a cliff or top of a building and I’d have to jump. But I wouldn’t die, I’d land, roll and have to keep running.

That and one I had a fee tomes where I’d hear giggling down stairs. I’d get half way
Down and the lights would blow. This thing would attack me. Wouldn’t hit me. It’d tickle me til I couldn’t breath any more.

  3. I was in hospital, having had my appendics out.
I was really, really hungry (this wasn’t the nightmare).
All there was to eat was this bland fish cooked in milk, with soggy mash (the only fish I eat comes battered!).
Anyhow, I ate it .. the hunger was unbearable.
I phoned my Mam begging her to come and get me immediately, as I was on the brink of starvation.
Unfortunatly, this wasn’t allowed – I had to wait to get dismissed by a doctor.
This is the nightmare bit …
I dreamnt that I was falling, and there was this man (with a very long nose), wrapped around my whole body.
I couldn’t move for his grip.
I instinctively knew that if I touched the bottom, it wasn’t good news!
I prised my arm free of his grasp, and punched him in the face as hard as I could .. pretty hard!!
Anyhow, I woke up .. sweating.
My Mam was all ears this time, when I phoned her.
And, she came and got me first thing in the morning.

  4. I have a recurring night terror where an old lady’s face appears in front of me at the edge of the bed. It’s absolutely terrifying and jolts me awake every time.

  5. The scariest one happened very recently. I’ve always had a resolve never to sit foot on a submarine. The thought really starts to send the shivers up my spine, which is strange as I love submarine movies: Grey Lady Down, Black Sea etc.

The dream was me suddenly waking up on a submarine (seemed very h itech, all sci fi white colouring in the compartment, none of the dingy pipes and the cramped spaces that there would be. The submarine took a very sharp turn to port and half way through the turn there was the screech of an impact, as if we were being sliced open along our sides. The emergency siren sounds and we’re all donning our survival suits and breathing apparatus. The submarine is trying to surface and we develop a very steep stern down attitude. The bow of the submarine is pointing up and we can hear a tremendous rush of water and screams from the compartment above us, the intercom starts shouting orders for us to open the hatch that is separating us the from the chaos beyond. Terrified we begin to turn the wheel……… It’s a dream I don’t want to go through again.

  6. I don’t really have nightmares any more but as I kid I used to have a recurring one about this ‘entity’ (never saw it) hunting me. It’d get closer and closer until it found me, wherever I was hiding, then I’d wake up with pins and needles. Awful.

  7. When I was 3 or 4 years old I had a dream about the Bogeyman. He was climbing through my bedroom window and I woke up screaming, ran from the bedroom and threw myself down the stairs. Luckily my dad heard my screams and was coming up the stairs and he caught me. I had to sleep in my parents bed that night.

  8. I always have recurring dreams about a plane crashing into my house, so now when im awake if a plane goes over low i get cold sweats, its awful

  9. Just the classic where i am being chased by something scary and no matter how fast i go or where ever i hide i am always found or caught

  10. A vision of my child falling off a cliff in Lands End. I am not good with heights and the vision of him going near the edge has stuck with me through several dreams

  11. My bad dreams always involve falling. The most weird has me driving very fast up a hill and then continuing upwards for a short spell and then crashing down to earth.

  12. I used to have nightmares that i was floating out of my body and would hit the ceiling and could look down on myself and would have to scream to wake myself up to get out of this dream, very freaky

  13. I once dreamed that I died, every night for a week! What’s up with that? It was in a different way each day too. I was shot, drowned, burned :S

  14. I can’t tell you my deepest, darkest, worst fears…if I let them out of my head, they’ll be in the real world so actually exist…and we can’t have that can we…oh no we can’t 😉

  15. i was being chased by a pack of dogs and normally i would be able to fly up to our neighbours porch roof but this time i couldn’t and i was starting to be attacked by them before i just woke up with a start, i used to have this nightmare regularly as a child but haven’t really had any since

  16. I had a repeating nightmare where I could not move in bed, and a ghost wearing a full face helmet stood at the bedroom door. After several nights of this I forced myself to fall out of the bed, onto my knees, the pain of hitting the floor woke me up, I was still in bed. What a trauma.

  17. I was locked in a small room slowly being gassed to death-I can still feel the pain of each breath I tried to take, it was agony and I will never forget that dream

  18. I used to have a lot of strange dreams but one night I had a dream that something was sat on my chest and I couldn’t breath! Woke up with a start and a sore chest 🙁

  19. Waking up one sunday morning and finding out i had got married the day before!!! NOOOOOOOOO it turned out to be true too. Better not let the wife see that though lol. Actually a real dream i had was that the house was on fire, i could even hear the flames and smell the smoke, i woke up all in a panic and woke the wife up telling her we have to get out the house is on fire, being half asleep she said what? i said the house is on fire can’t you smell the smoke we have to get out. Well of course there was no smoke or fire, and i had woken her from a very deep and sound sleep, none the less i still went round the whole house just to check nothing was actually burning, and it wasn’t but it seemed so real as did the smell of smoke. We found out later that an earlier (male) occupier of that house was an air raid warden during the war and had previously worked with the fire brigade at putting out fires caused by bombs and incendaries, i don’t believe in ghosts, but that was a bit of a co-incidence i thought.

  20. I’ve had that teeth falling out dream, which I found a bit disturbing, but on the whole I don’t remember my dreams and don’t have nightmares.

  21. When I was a child I had a recurring nightmare with tall, lean men carrying rifles, along with snakes, would be flying through my bedroom window and across my room and I was just gripped with fear

  22. I experience sleep paralysis once! I just remember being in a car crash in my nightmare and something reaching to grab me. I woke up and couldn’t move but could feel something grabbing me! It was HORRIBLE.

  23. I had a recurring nightmare as a child where I was being chased by gorillas up a wall. When I got over the wall I was in a beautiful valley where there was a cute house. The lady there looked after me and poured me tea. But it turned out that the gorillas were trying to stop me from going to the witches house. Crazy imagination as a child!!

  24. An apocalyptic nightmare where fire was raining down from the skies, skyscrapers were shredded and people were walking around with holes in them

  25. The worst nightmare I’ve ever had was one night when I was at university. I got trapped in my dream and someone was trying to kill me. When I woke up from the dream I must have fallen asleep again fairly quickly and got trapped again!!

  26. Same dream, stuck in some kind of house with things coming after me – I just seem to go round in circles and then there are other people who I have to help before I can get away. It’s never ending.

  27. I used to have the same dream every night without fail … A nightmare not a dream.

I would be walking through a little housing estate and it would suddenly start getting darker, I didn’t know where I was as it was so dark but I would hear footsteps coming behind me, but looking around I could never see anyone, then as I turn the corner underneath part of a house, a big man with a huge knife dripping with blood would appear. Just standing there, looking at me,.

I would start to run and make it to the steps of someone’s house, where I would try and jump over the banister part of the steps but he would always be behind me ready to grab my leg. I’d just manage to knock the door and shout when he would drag me down to the bottom of the steps with a hand over my mouth. An elderly woman would answer the door, but not being able to see me would just close the door and then the big man would drag me down the street.

I would always wake up when this huge blade was inches from my face.

I was around 15 or 16 when I started having this dream and it carried on for about 3 months and then stopped and I haven’t had it since … Thankfully!

  28. I used to suffer with night terrors when I was a child, everything from monsters to unseen entities featured. However I think that the worst one I had was as an adult, when I dreamed that someone was pinning me down to the bed & I couldn’t move. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I felt as though I was awake. This thing sitting on me, it’s knees digging into my legs and its hands pinning my shoulders.
In the end I managed to get a scream out – loud enough to wake the whole street, I think. My husband came running in from the kitchen and found me not moving, just screaming. The next morning there were bruises where the hands and knees had been pinning me down. That, more than anything, scared me.

  29. Had an awful panicky dream about a man standing by the side of the bed – but then woke up to see him still there! That was my first hallucination and still have them.

  32. years ago i had a dream about this house that was all in darkness i knew i had to get in to rescues someone being held inside, when i got in i went to a dark room full of doll heads in various states hanging from the ceiling and a big wardrobe i opened the wardrobe and found myself inside it, but i was dead, i touched my own cold, grey looking cheek and woke up, i got a fright. lol. was creepy like.

  36. I keep having a recurring nightmare about fruit machines, the wife is really supportive and to wake me up, she just gives me a nudge

  37. i once dreamt i had lost my fish, they were all dead, but like lying all over the floor and up the walls etc. really horrible at the time, but thinking back its just weird!

  38. Dream paralysis.. The scariest thing I have ever experienced. I first got it when I was pregnant and had it a few times since then. I don’t know if you’re all familiar with it.. You’re dreaming but it feels real, same surroundings etc but you are paralyzed in your bed and a dark creature comes into my room and stands and watches over me. It’s never gone further than that becuase I know some people say it feels like the weight of them is on their chest and they can’t breathe or do anything. But the presence feels so real. It’s so scary!

  39. The worst nightmare I had was when I was dreaming I was awake in bed and a lady was trying to grab me and I was trying to wake up my husband but he couldn’t hear me as I could speak.it felt so real ,i remember saying to myself wake up wake up.It was so scary.

  40. I dreamt my next door neighbour was wandering around the back yard, crying for his wife and dog, in the dream, I told him that his wife and dog were not here, and he should go, but he wouldn’t, his face was blue and he had fangs, I woke up, and my husband told me that our neighbour had died in the night. Scary.
