Well this is getting ridiculous. Disney have already remade Sleeping Beauty [Maleficent] and Cinderella, The Jungle Book is due out soon, Beauty And The Beast has just finished filming, and Cruella De Vil, Genies [I don’t need to say what that’s a prequel to], and a Prince Charming origin film are in pre-production. Now they’ve decided to revisit their groundbreaking 1937 classic Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, despite the fact that not long ago we had two Snow White films from other studios, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War is just about to come out [though of course Snow White isn’t in that].
This take seems rather odd. The main character is apparently going to be Snow White’s sister Rose Red. She appeared in a number of the Brothers Grimm stories, but not in the story of Snow White. Disney were originally going to make a stand-alone film about Red, with a script by Justin Merz. Then Evan Daugherty was asked to rewrite it and came up with the bright [or not] idea of moving the story of Red into the Snow White story. Now it’s been reported that this film will have a “companion piece” feel, with Red basically transported into the plot of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.
In fact, Snow White is incapacitated for most of the story, because it kicks into gear when she takes a bite from a poison apple, which then leads to her falling into a Sleeping Death. This is when Rose Red steps up to the plate, even though she has been estranged from her sibling for some time. With the help of Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey, Rose Red embarks on a dangerous adventure and journey to stop the curse and also to wake Snow White from her eternal slumber.
It sounds to me that once again filmmakers are trying to tap into the Frozen market with another tale of two sisters. I liked the new Cinderella a great deal, but feel that Maleficent missed the mark, and it does seem the House Of the Mouse is creativily bankrupt in terms of their live action output as they seem to be doing little more than revisiting their animated movies.
