NEW INSTALMENT IN ‘PIRANHA’ FRANCHISE COMING FROM JAPAN!

There have been six installments in the Piranha franchise so far, beginning in 1978. Joe Dante’s Roger Corman-produced original, even if thought up as an obvious answer to Jaws, instantly became a minor ‘B’ classic with a typically sharp John Sayles script. It had a hilariously awful sequel directed by no less than James Cameron in 1981 entitled Piranha 2: The Spawning. Corman produced a surprisingly good TV movie remake in 1995. Then in 2010 we got Piranha 3D which was a lot of fun, and the rather grating Piranha 3DD in 2012. The latter was a commercial disappointment, which is probably why a planned sequel was never put into production…..until now!

It seems that current Piranha franchise rights holder/producer Hisako Tsukaba is currently prepping a new series installment titled Summer of the Piranha [alternatively titled Piranha JPN] over in her home country of Japan, for a planned 2018 release. And Corman himself is on board to executive produce!

And that’s all we know so far, but here’s some concept art courtesy of Bloody Disgusting

About Dr Lenera 2010 Articles

I’m a huge film fan and will watch pretty much any type of film, from Martial Arts to Westerns, from Romances [though I don’t really like Romcoms!]] to Historical Epics. Though I most certainly ‘have a life’, I tend to go to the cinema twice a week! However, ever since I was a kid, sneaking downstairs when my parents had gone to bed to watch old Universal and Hammer horror movies, I’ve always been especially fascinated by horror, and though I enjoy all types of horror films, those Golden Oldies with people like Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee probably remain my favourites. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy a bit of blood and gore every now and again though, and am also a huge fan of Italian horror, I just love the style.
