Well, this is a turn up for the books!
Despite what appeared a negative feeling from everyone within the SCREAM franchise over the box office takings of its 4th installement, it now seems all of this was just hot air and the studio are in fact happy with it all and guess what? There will be a Scream 5 or if I can 5CREAM (cool in it!)
It seems the UK and everyone else apart from America have saved the franchise from going to the straight to DVD as it brought the films total gross so far up to $87 million. If you take into account the DVD sales which have always been the franchise main strength, then there is no question that Scre4m more will see a massive profit which puts to end the myth that the sequel was a massive flop!
What also helped was the massive positive feedback from die-hard fans who have lavished praise on the new film which many say is the perfect love letter to the cherished original. When interviewed by MTV at the Cannes Film Festival last week Harvey Weinstein who loves his horror baby said “” I’m sure [Wes Craven is] going to do a sequel,” adding that “foreign [sales] are so strong that we’ll do over $100m worldwide. It’s at 90 now, with about five or six major countries to go, and a lot of small ones. We’ll probably do $110m. I wish it had been better domestically. But it’s not the worst thing in the world that’s ever happened.”
So there you have it!
With Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette already signed up alongside Craven and even Kevin Williamson who is contracted to write a 5th film, it seems that Ghostface is still not ready to put down the blade!
For me, this is great news, I was blown away by the 4th film at first watch even though hand on heart watching it the second time made me realise that nostalgia blinkered may way of thinking and it was no where near as good has the first two films! Never the less, it was a solid slasher film that made me ripe for more and I will be watching this news closely for our HCF readers!
They’ve got to revamp and refresh the series because Ghostface has become a parody of itself.
