The Dark Tower has been cancelled again, Universal have pulled the plug, but is all hope lost? (Update: Stephen King responds)

Blimey, I made that sound like the end of the world there! However, to some it could mean just that. Stephen Kings The Dark Tower was all set to go after one cancellation and Ron Howard was all set to move his film forward with Javier Bardem in the lead role of Roland Deschain. In the film gunslinger Deschain was set to roam the Old West in search of a Dark Tower which could hopefully preserve the dying planet. Howard had planned a three part series consisting of a feature length film followed by two TV series’. Sadly Universal have now stopped the project due to budget restraints.

At the moment the film is not happening, and it all hangs on whether a distributor can be found who could fund the film. After funding Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, all eyes on now on Warners.

(Update) Stephen King recently asked how he felt about the film being cancelled by Entertainment Weekly, here’s what he had to say;

“I’m sorry Universal passed, but not really surprised,” he told EW. “As a rule, they’ve been about smaller and less risky pix; maybe they feel it would be better to stick with those fast and furious racing boys. I bear them no ill will and trust Ron Howard to get Roland and his friends before the camera somewhere else. He’s very committed to the project.”

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
