We all knew it was coming, the rumour of a remake of Pet Sematary has been circulating for some time now, but the question is, who was going to direct the remake of such a beloved horror classic? Well, that question is close to being answered as Paramount are now head hunting Alexandre Aja to take charge. Apparently his name keeps appearing on wish lists for who people would like see direct the remake, and with Aja’s current track record of remakes (The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, Piranha) he would see like a good choice. As to whether he will take the job is all down to where he can fit in into his schedule as he is currently still looking for funding for his sci-fi blockbuster Cobra: The Space Pirate, which is due to begin filming in 2013.
Personally I feel Aja would be a great choice, apart from the dreadful Mirrors his films have been superb. Just look at his remakes of The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha, or better still his debut Switchblade Romance. Pet Sematary was a vicious little horror back in the 80’s about a pet sematary with the power to bring the dead back to life, but with horrific consequences. Aja would up the violence and probably make this remake into something very special indeed. A script has already been written by Matt Greenberg (1408, Reign of Fire) and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Steven Schneider are standing by waiting for a director. All we can do now is wait, and hope Aja takes the job.
