In what feels like a century, Johnny Depp and his company Infinitum Nihil have finally brought Hunter S. Thompson’s first written novel (not counting Prince Jellyfish which to this day is unpublished), The Rum Diary, to the big screen. Johnny plays Paul Kemp, Hunter S. Thompson’s fictional alter ego, a sports journalist who travels to Puerto Rico, South America to work for the San Juan Star. Here he befriends journalists and experiences the highs and lows of life…with the aid of rum.
To be honest, it’s been a good 7 years since I read The Rum Diary but I know from watching the trailer that it’s not quite what I had envisioned. Firstly, there’s a lack of Yeamon, one of the slightly violent characters and boyfriend to Chenault, a lush lass played in the film by Amber Heard.
I hope this is an 18 certificate, because with it’s rowdiness, violence and the beach sex scene, it shouldn’t be anything less.
Nevertheless, I will be watching. Even if it doesn’t live up to the book, it still looks a hoot.
The film is directed by Bruce Robinson (Withnail and I) and is in UK Cinemas from 4th November 2011
