After the massive success of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series which launched in April this year, New Line Cinema have decided it is time for another movie, hooray to that! And in even better news, the director of that particular web series, Kevin Tancharoen, is expected to direct the feature length movie.
Tancharoen made his name as a choreographer for both Madonna and Britney Spears, and then went on to direct both the Glee movie and the remake of Fame, but don’t let that put you off! He is a massive Mortal Kombat fan (who isn’t!) and if you have seen any of his ‘Legacy’ episodes, you will know the chap is capable of delivering the goods, and then some.
Tancharoen has been keen to direct a new Mortal Kombat movie for a while, and even pitched an idea earlier this year around the same time he released Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, another short film which appeared online. Oren Uziel was drafted in to write the short film, and actors Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan were hired to star.
The short film attracted 10 million viewers on Youtube, and this lead to Tancharoen making the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which brought in a further 50 million viewers. This success made Warners and New Line take note, and they have now started early development on the new film, with both Uziel called back to write and Tancharoen to direct. No actors or plot have yet been revealed.
More as it happens.
