Out with the ‘Old’ and in with the ‘Ken’ for Akira remake as Ken Watanabe offered role intended for Gary Oldman

When we brought you the news that both Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter were being offered roles in Jaume Collet-Serra’s live action Akira movie, I was a very happy man indeed. I love Gary Oldman, he is a national treasure and it doesn’t matter what film he is in, I will watch it. Sadly, the role of The Colonel which Oldman had been offered will now go to someone else since Oldman and Warners could not seal a deal.

The good news though is that finally some casting of a Japanese background has been announced as Ken Watanabe has now been offered the role of The Colonel. Nothing has been agreed as yet, but this is good news regardless. Watanabe is the perfect casting choice, a highly recognised star around the world after appearing in films such as Inception, Letters From Iwo Jima, Batman Begins and Memoirs of a Geisha.

The film has had many ups and downs but is finally starting to take shape with Garret Hedlund and Kristen Stewart also rumoured to be cast.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
