At one point rumoured to be the toughest man in the world, Chuck Norris has managed to stand up to a whole bunch of brawlers as news reached the world of The Expendables 2’s PG-13 rating. A PG-13 in the US basically means a 12A here in the UK, or a 15 at best. Chuck Norris has basically said he will not allow swearing in his movies, never has, never will. Being such a tough man, who can apparently knock people out with his chin (joke!), Mr Norris has asked for all swearing to be removed from The Expendables 2. Now, this shouldn’t really be an issue for Stallone, Arnie, Jet Li or even Van Damme. But just how the Hell did Norris convince Jason feckin Statham and Bruce Willis to cool it with the language? I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when that conversation happened:
Norris “I am tougher than all of you, and I will not allow swearing in this movie”
Statham “Thats fuckin bollocks mate”
Willis “You piece of shit”
Norris “I am the toughest man in the world, I fought Bruce Lee, I will destroy all of you with one finger!”
Anyway, here is what Norris said of the decision in a recent interview:
With The Expendables 2, you have a lot of hard language in there that means that young people won’t be able to see it. I said, I don’t do movies like that. I didn’t do them in the past, I didn’t do them on my TV series. I said, you have to cut out all the language, hardcore language or I can’t do it. So they did, and Expendables is now a PG-13 film so kids can see it.
So KIDS can see it, for Heaven’s sake! Why reduce the certificate of such a blistering action film as this just so that KIDS can see it! Have they reduced the violence levels too? I know swearing is not completely necessary to improve a film, but honestly the level of violence in the first film would indicate this film cannot possibly go any lower than a 15?
Anyway, Harry Knowles at Aint It Cool News email Stallone hoping to get to the bottom of the problem, sadly, Stallone confirmed the issue:
“Harry, the film is fantastic with Van Damme turning in an inspired performance… Our final battle is one for the ages. The PG-13 rumor is true, but before your readers pass judgement, trust me when I say this film is LARGE in every way and delivers on every level. This movie touches on many emotions which we want to share with the broadest audience possible, BUT, fear not, this Barbeque of Grand scale Ass Bashing will not leave anyone hungry… Sly”
Stallone does give a glimmer of hope there, so I guess only time will tell. The Expendables 2 arrives in UK cinemas in August. To see more news, including a trailer and synopsis, click here
