Well, the actual villain character has not actually been named, but the actor playing him is in final discussions to take the role, and it is very good news! Sir Ben Kingsley is the man currently negotiating over playing the role of the villain for Iron Man 3, and with shooting expected to begin next month, confirmation of Kingsley’s role should hopefully arrive soon. Whatever villain he plays, Kingsley is a superb actor and is guaranteed to bring something extra special to the new superhero flick.
While the villain for Iron Man 3 is not yet known, there have been rumours of it being The Mandarin. Back in 2010, Iron Man 1 & 2 director Jon Favreau was expected to be directing the third film, and here is what he said about the next villain:
“You have to do The Mandarin,” he said. “The problem with The Mandarin is, the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. He also has 10 magical rings, and it just doesn’t feel right for our thing, so it’s either tech-based or the rings are not really rings.”
However, further talks are hinting that the new villain will not be The Mandarin:
It has been said that if Kingsley takes on the role, then his character would be “involved in the spread of a virus through nanobots, given that “Iron Man 3” is loosely based on Warren Ellis’ six-issue “Extremis” comicbook series first published in 2005. That arc — which also heavily influenced the first “Iron Man” pic — introduced a new origin story and focused heavily on nanotechnology.”
It has also been rumoured that Tony Stark will get involved in Nanobot technology, where the high-tech solution allows Stark to become the walking embodiment of his suit, giving him lots of new powers, but new enemies.
However, no one knows for sure, but it is also expected that there will be hints to what is to come in Iron Man 3 in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers Assemble, due out on 26th April. Again, this is not confirmed, but best you watch the Avengers Assemble closely for any clues.
Iron Man 3 will be directed by Shane Black, who also co-writes with Drew Pierce, the film is slated for a UK release on 3rd May 2013.
More as it develops.
