Mia Wasikowska and Zoe Aggeliki targeted to play Johanna Mason in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

The casting news continues for director Francis Lawrence’s highly anticipated sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Recently it was announced that Philip Seymour Hoffman was in negotiations to play Gamemaker  Plutarch Heavensbee, and while the character Finnick Odair is still yet to be cast, The Playlist have reported two possible names targeted for the role of Johanna Mason.

Alice in Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska and model and R.I.P.D actress Zoe Aggeliki are both at the top of a list of names to play Mason. The role is quite a key character, with Mason becoming a strong ally with Katniss (Jennider Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) in the 75th Annual Hunger Games. Katniss likens Mason to an older sister who hates you, and their relationship is severely tested. Mason’s weapon of choice is an axe, and she is a bit of a wild character: hailing from District 7, she has no family or friends left there. Director Lawrence has said he is keen to find the right person for the role, regardless of whether she is a big name actress or a relative unknown.

The sequel to the 2008 bestseller by Suzanne Collins continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. Due to the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of The Hunger Games.

Filming is expected to begin in Autumn, with a planned release date of 22nd November 2013.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth will all reprise their roles of Katniss, Peeta and Gale, and also returning will be Woody Harreslson, Lenny Kravitz, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Toby Jones. Simon Beaufoy wrote the screenplay based on Suzanne Collins’ novel. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) is directing.

More on this as it develops.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
