Comic-Con: First ever footage from Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ revealed

Director Guillermo del Toro treated eager fans at Comic-Con to the first ever footage of his new monsters vs robots epic, Pacific Rim. Word is the footage was incredibly well received, and while it sounds like the entire convention seems to have been taken over by a surprise visit by Godzilla, the Pacific Rim footage more than did its job. Many websites in attendance at the convention have reported on the awesome sounding footage, and I can share some snippets here, but please, try and stay calm as you read ot for it really does sound terrific!

Bloody Disgusting reports:

“The trailer opened with a couple of older fellows with a metal detector walking in the snow. Said detector starts going crazy and they look up and there is a giant robot missing an arm. The words “To fight monsters/ We made monsters” flash across the screen.

All the while showing HUGE Kaiju like monsters destroying bridges, being shot at by jets, and then a giant robot (piloted by two pilots brain linked to each other controlling either the left or right hemisphere of the body). Robots punch monsters. Straight up wrestling moves. Think a live fight between Jet Jaguar and Chtulhu.”

Adding to the excitement, CinemaBlend says:

“A title card saying “Summer 2013” appears on screen and we see a huge Kaiju rises out of the ocean and completely decimates abridge as jets fly in to try and attack (they aren’t super effective). We then see our first look at the cast, including Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba, who line up and get in their suits, ready to pilot their Jaegars. Kikuchi and Hunnam are shown inside of their mech piloting in unison, throwing punches that sync with the robots moving. There are shots of Charlie Day walking into a very elaborate building, and Ron Perlman staring into the sky while wearing red sunglasses. A Jaeger and a Kaiju fight in the middle of the ocean We hear Elba giving an inspirational speech to a group of pilots, motivating them to get ready for a big fight. It ends with him declaring, “Today we are cancelling the apocalypse,” as we see one of the Jaegars level a huge blow on a monster”

Seriously, if you weren’t excited, you will be now, and if you were excited then there is a good chance you just might piss your pants as you begin to shake with anticipation. Now comes the hard part to report: it was also announced at Comic-Con that this would be the ONLY footage shown from this film this year, so us poor souls unable to attend will just have to picture this in our heads and just wait until next year for anything else. However, you never know, and with reports saying that the effects looked terrific even though the film is nowhere near complete, del Toro just might allow fans one sneak peek before the year is out?

Directed by Guillermo del Tor and written by Travis Beacham, Pacific Rim stars Idris Elba (Prometheus), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Charlie Hunnam (Horrible Bosses), Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr and Robert Maillet.

Pacific Rim is expected to arrive in UK cinemas 12th July 2013.

Here is the official synopsis:

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”).  Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films).  The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Del Toro’s behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Andrew Neskoromny, editor Peter Amundson, and costume designer Kate Hawley.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
