Jena Malone offered role of Johanna Mason in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

The role of Johanna Mason in Francis Lawrence’s Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, has been hitting the headlines a lot recently. A number of different names have been circulating, and finally today we have confirmation that the role has now been offered to Jena Malone.

Malone’s last big film was Sucker Punch, and since then she has appeared in TV series Hatfields and McCoys, and smaller films like In Our Nature and For Ellen. The character of Mason also appears in the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy,Mockingjay. The role is quite a key character, with Mason becoming a strong ally with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) in the 75th Annual Hunger Games. Katniss likens Mason to an older sister who hates you, and their relationship is severely tested. Mason’s weapon of choice is an axe, and she is a bit of a wild character: hailing from District 7, she has no family or friends left there.

With production expected to begin in September, there is still one major role looking for an actor. The role of Finnick Odair is still yet to be filled.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth will all reprise their roles of Katniss, Peeta and Gale, and also returning will be Woody Harreslson, Lenny Kravitz, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Toby Jones. Philip Seymour Hoffman is also joining the cast as Plutarch Heavensbee. Simon Beaufoy wrote the screenplay based on Suzanne Collins’ novel. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) is directing.

More on this as it develops.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
