We brought you the news yesterday that Kick Ass 2: Ball to the Wall director Jeff Wadlow had Tweeted a rather interesting hint that Jim Carrey had indeed joined the cast as Colonel Stars. Deadline now confirms that Carrey is now in the cast, and we can all celebrate a very exciting prospect for the new film. Carrey proved himself in Batman Forver that he can handle the superhero stuff, and do it well (he was the best thing about that film in my opinion), and being a huge fan of the original film, I have no doubts that Carrey will bring something very special to this.
Carrey will play Colonel Stars, a founding member of Justice Forever who recruits heroes to the crime fighting group. It was also announced recently that Lindy Booth will be joining the cast as Night Bitch, a member of the Justice Forever team. Inspired by Kick-Ass, Night Bitch joins the Justice Forever in the hope of avenging her sisters death. With the talk that Colonel Stars is also to appear in the film, it would appear that Justice Forever will be playing a major part in the sequel.
Co creator and writer Mark Millar took to his blog post yesterday to discuss the casting, here is a little of what he said:
“Matthew Vaughn, Jeff Wadlow and I did a conference call with Jim a couple of weeks back and we’ve been itching to talk about this ever since because the energy Jim’s going to bring to Colonel Stars has me buzzing as much as Nic Cage with Big Daddy.”
He continued: We didn’t quite know what Jim was going to be doing in the sequel, but the entire team loves him to bits and I’ve been a fan since I first saw him. I remember reading an interview with Spielberg, a great one back in Empire for a JAws anniversary, where he was saying that Jim would be his choice for Chief Brodie were he shooting Jaws now. He said he could see the brilliant dramatic range Jim had as well as the comedy people knew him for at that time.”
Millar also mentioned a big role in the film still to be announced: “The movie runs from Hit-Girl #1 to Kick-Ass 2 #7 and fans of the comic will know that the part of Uncle Ralphie is still to be announced. He’s the big bad from the Hit-Girl series and you, my friends, are in for a treat.”
Chloe Grace Moretz is returning as Hit-Girl, Aaron Johnson is back as Kick-Ass and Christopher Mintz-Plasse returns as Red Mist. New cast members include: John Leguizamo as one of Red Mists body guards, and Donald Faison as Doctor Gravity. It is also rumoured that Nic Cage might play a small cameo, in flashback form of course!
Matthew Vaughn is not directing this one, but he will produce. Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down, Cry Wolf) will both write and direct and the sequel has a title of Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall. It is also been said that the makers are indeed aiming for an R rating for the film, which could mean either an 18 or 15 cert here in the UK.
We will bring you more updates as they happen, and hopefully a synopsis will be revealed soon.
