I have been talking about Jose Padilha’s Robocop remake for some time now. In fact, it would be safe to say I have kind of been defending it against the huge amount of fans who feel it is totally unnecessary. Why? Well, two reasons: firstly is the director, Jose Padilha directed Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, two of the finest films Brazil has ever given us. Secondly is the cast: Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley and Joel Kinnaman as Murphy/Robocop. Now, don’t get me wrong but I absolutely adore Paul Verhoeven’s classic original film, and in my mind it cannot be bettered. However, the remake, for a while, had me very excited.
With filming beginning yesterday in Toronto, the first on-set pictures have already emerged, and wouldn’t you know it, they are of our all new Robocop. Sadly, I don’t like it, I don’t like it at all! It is like a cross between Nolan’s Batsuit with a touch of Dredd and something else I can’t quite put my finger on. It is hideous, and while it was rumoured that the remake would see Robocop without the visor, these pictures confirm it. I am hoping that maybe some other stuff will be added to the suit digitally later on, but for now, no I don’t like it. While I am all for changing something if you are remaking it, change it for the better. This new black suit just looks silly. Please, let this not be the final product, pleeease!!!
Check out the images below, and just for comparison reasons, I have also included a picture of Verhoeven’s much better version.
