Marvel President Kevin Feige talks of a possible Hulk movie, but not until after The Avengers 2

Speak to anyone about Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, and chances are they will at some point mention just how incredibly awesome Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was. However, while Iron Man, Captain America and Thor are all currently in production on their new adventures, and with Guardians of the Galaxy being the last Marvel film before The Avengers 2, fans are eager to find out if in fact a Hulk movie is part of the plan for Marvel.

As The Avengers begins to take control of the DVD & Blu-ray charts, Marvel president Kevin Feige recently spoke with MTV  about the future of the angry green beast, among other things, and Feige hinted at a possible Hulk movie to come after The Avengers 2 has been released. When asked about the possibility of a Hulk movie, Feige said:

“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe.”

He then went on to explain about two Hulk comic stories which could be an option:

“‘Planet Hulk’ is a cool story. ‘World War Hulk’ is a cool story.  I think there’s pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself.  It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table.”

Planet Hulk see’s the beast banished from Earth for being too dangerous, and sent to a far off planet where he fights as a gladiator. World War Hulk see’s him return to Earth after the events of Planet Hulk, to have his revenge.

Feige then went on to explain how the Hulk worked in Whedon’s Avengers:

“Part of what’s fun about the way we played him in ‘Avengers’ is the ensemble quality of it. I think the pathos and humor, most importantly, that Mark and Joss brought to it showcased a different element of Hulk that’s there in the comics, and was always inherent in his character. But when he was so brooding in his other two films, he didn’t get to have that wry sense of humor that Mark did such an amazing job performing.”

However, before you get too excited about a Hulk movie coming anytime soon, Feige did confirm that Marvel is set with what is planned, and it appears that Phase Two will end with The Avengers 2:

“Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in ‘Avengers’? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until ‘Avengers 2.’ So there’s a lot of time to think about it.”

The most exciting thing to take from this interview is that Feige and Marvel believe in the potential for a Hulk movie, and that is good enough for me. Marvel, Disney, Feige and Whedon are not stupid, and they definitely understand that the amazing response to The Hulk in the Avengers is not something they will ignore. Roll on Phase Three I say!

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
