Rumours eh, you gotta love ’em, and this one is very exciting indeed (if it does turn out to be true). Website Nuke the Fridge, are reporting that there are plans in place to release Christopher Noan’s epic, The Dark Knight Rises, as a director’s cut with thirty minutes of extra footage! Too good to be true? Yeah probably, Nolan has never made a director’s cut, and being the perfectionist that he is, probably never will so already these rumours don’t sit right. But wait, what’s that? Oh, there are some factors that could indeed point to this being true?
Well, firstly is the fact that The Dark Knight Rises stretched the capabilities of the IMAX projectors, and the machines could only just manage to play the staggering 165 minute film. In order for Nolan to be able to play the film in IMAX there is a good chance some scenes had to be either edited or removed in order to shrink the size of the film. Secondly there is the question of Bane’s origin, something that the film’s costume designer Lindy Hemming let slip in an interview with GQ in early August. Here is what she said after not seeing the finished film:
Having rescued Talia al Ghul from that God awful prison, Bane got beaten senseless and this lead to the breathing apparatus he uses in the film. Hemming revealed that the scene revealed why Bane wore the mask, and where it came from:
“So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury,” confirmed Hemming. “Even if he hasn’t got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he’s learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he’s wearing an early version of his waist belt. It’s showing support, but it’s not the finished one he eventually wears. He’s also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together.”
Hemming also described another scene where Bane is chained up and beaten while wearing the mask, however in the film we only get a brief glimpse of this. Hemming explains:
“Well, if you look at the film, unless they’ve cut it—and I’m sure they haven’t—there’s a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he’s fighting and being taunted by people. He’s got chains on him, and he’s standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he’s wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask… There was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.”
As if by magic, the rumours circulating are stating that the thirty minute directors cut will indeed delve into Bane’s origins, but also give more screen time to Ra’s Al Ghul. This is all merely speculation right now, just a rumour so don’t go getting to excited just yet. However, I am definitely up for a directors cut, so it would be very nice if this were to be true.
We will keep you posted.
