Last week I reported on the news that Frank Grillo (The Grey, Zero Dark Thirty, End of Watch, Warrior) had auditioned for a part in The Russo Brothers directed sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The rumour was that Grillo was looking to play the part of the films villain Crossbone, and today Variety is reporting that it has now been confirmed.
Grillo clearly made a good impression, and will now play the villain in Captain America 2, as Crossbone. Shooting is expected to begin in March 2013 with Chris Evans returning as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and I would expect Samuel L. Jackson to return as Nicky Fury, and also Sebastian Stan as James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes turned The Winter Soldier.
Crossbones is one of the key villains in Captain America’s rogues gallery. Created in 1989, the character began as a young gang member in New York who was forced to flee to a school for criminals after brutalizing a young girl and killing one of her brothers. After three years of training he became an instructor at the school and then became a mercenary who aligned with Albert Malik, a KGB agent who assumed the identity of the Red Skull. He also has a significant role in the “Civil War” storyline that also includes Falcon and Winter Solider, so this could be exactly where Marvel is drawing their story.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is expected to arrive in cinemas in 3D on April 4th 2014.
