Guillermo del Toro promotional video gives us our first glimpse of a giant robot from ‘Pacific Rim’

Guillermo del Toro’s giant robots vs giant monsters epic, Pacific Rim, has to be one of the most anticipated films of next year. Fans simply cannot wait to see something, anything from the film, and today you wish (although very brief) is granted.

Fans at this years Comic Con in San Diego were treated to a load of footage from the film which never made its way on-line after, so sadly those of us who couldn’t make the event have yet to see anything. We haven’t even had a picture of the giants yet! However today comes a three minute video which has del Toro talking about his visual effects company Mirada.

In the three minute video del Toro talks about how they have created some of cinemas most memorable creatures, including footage from Hellboy 2 and Pan’s Labyrinth. However, at precisely 1:15 you will see a clip of a giant robot stepping out from behind a skyscraper, he raises his arm, arms it wife missiles and fires them! There is no doubt that this is footage from Pacific Rim, and the giant robot is part of a government weapons project known as Jaegers.

While the footage is clearly not quite finished yet, it does give us a clue as to just how big Pacific Rim is going to be, and just how epic del Toro has made it. We expected these monsters and giant robots to be big, but boy this thing is huge!!

Directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by Travis Beacham, Pacific Rim stars Idris Elba (Prometheus), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Charlie Hunnam (Horrible Bosses), Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr and Robert Maillet.

Pacific Rim is expected to arrive in UK cinemas 12th July 2013.

Here is the official synopsis:

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”).  Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films).  The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Del Toro’s behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Andrew Neskoromny, editor Peter Amundson, and costume designer Kate Hawley.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
