Before I begin this article, please remember that this is a rumour, a RUMOUR and absolutely nothing is confirmed. However, being Star Wars and being a very very exciting director possibly involved, I just have to report this.
After Disney made a deal with George Lucas for his Lucasfilm company for over $4 billion last week, many stories have been doing the rounds of plans for the next three Star Wars movies, interviews with previous cast members, people like Mark Hamill saying how Lucas came to him in the Summer and hinted at a new future for Star Wars, all this stuff has been going on. Fans have been talking about where they would like to see the story go from Return of the Jedi, and there have even been wish-lists posted on cast and directors for the new film. However, did Matthew Vaughn appear on anyone’s wish-list?
According to Collider, there are un-confirmed reports that Vaughn may be in talks with Disney to direct Star Wars: Episode VII. Vaughn was the man who gave us the superb Kick-Ass and breathed new life into the X-Men series with the phenomenal X-Men: First Class, and gave the gangster flick a much needed injection of brilliance with Layer Cake. Vaughn is also a producer (The Debt, Harry Brown, Lock Stock and Snatch) and more importantly a writer (Kick-Ass, Stardust, The Debt, X-Men: First Class). Should he become the director of the new Star Wars film, he has the creative mind to control the script as well, and with his stunning work so far, Vaughn would make an exceptional Star Wars movie. If you take into account the directors overall output, and his normally veering toward the more serious side of things, I would expect a more Empire Strikes Back than Return of the Jedi from Vaughn. That is based on the idea that this rumour turns out to be true.
It has also been reported that this just might explain Vaughn’s sudden departure from directing the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past for Fox. As we reported last week, Bryan Singer has now taken over directing the new X-Men film, but Vaughn will stick around as a producer. Disney are planning to have Star Wars: Episode VII in cinemas sometime in 2015, so with The Avengers 2 and Justice League movie also due out that year, we could be looking at the biggest year in the history of cinema!
In yet another Star Wars related rumour, apparently Harrison Ford has expressed an interest in returning as Han Solo:
“Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it,” said a source close to the newly announced sequel. “All three of them are!” All three of them meaning Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.
It’s a surprising rumour since Ford requested Solo be killed off in the film, only for Lucas to persuade him otherwise. Ford also said of the franchise:
“I don’t know that I understood it very well, I’m not sure I understand it yet… I was very happy to be involved. I was pleased to be a part of an ensemble.”
May the rumours and teasing continue!!!
