What a week it has been for X-Men fans: already we have had the rumour that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan are to return to the franchise as Xavier and Magneto in Bryan Singer’s, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and now another equally exciting rumour has hit the internet.
It sounds like Singer is wanting to get his old X-Men gang back together because THR reporting that Hugh Jackman is in talks to appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past as Wolverine. You will remember he had a cameo in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, however his role here just might be much bigger.
It has not been reported just what capacity Wolverine will appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but with the film taking place both as a prequel to Singer’s trilogy, and as a story which takes place later on, there is a good chance Wolverine might turn up in the future aspect of the story with both Stewart as Xavier and McKellen as Magneto.
See, the new films jumps though different timelines, with the X-Men of the present having to alter the future to stop the Sentinels hunting Mutants. It is thought that Mystique will also appear as a villain who fronts the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and in this future Mutants live in internment camps.
There has also been a rumour that Famke Janssen may be appearing in The Wolverine in a cameo as well, so it would appear that The Wolverine character is tying all these films together, sort of. This is indeed exciting news, and should this all come true, then X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to be one hell of a film. Fingers crossed all the timelines and different versions of the same character will work, and if it does then with this, Marvel’s Phase Two and Warner and DC’s Justice League in the works, superhero fans are seriously being spoiled right now!
Fox are expecting, as planned, to go into production on X-Men: Days of Future Past early in 2013, and are sticking to their scheduled release date of July 18th 2014. X-Men: Days of Future Past is being written by Jane Goldman, Simon Kinberg and Matthew Vaughn and will see the newly formed titular team working to prevent an alternate future where mutants are hunted by giant machines called The Sentinels.
It follows the 1980s’ comic storyline written by Chris Claremont that alternates between a present day battle against the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline where an assassination of a government official has led to Sentinels roaming the land and mutants held prisoner in internment camps.
So far the cast for X-Men: Days of Future Past, is looking something like this: Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman.
