‘Justice League’: Zack Snyder hints to ‘Man of Steel’ link, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Batman?

A couple of stories have been going around since yesterday, and both are very big hints at what’s to come with Warner Brothers own superhero project, DC’s Justice League. Aiming for a release in 2015, the same year Marvel and Disney will be releasing their own massive superhero flick The Avengers 2, Justice League just might be the start of Warners own superhero franchise.

However, with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel the only DC superhero flick coming out between now and Justice Leagues planned release, will there be a Marvel style link between the two films? Back in March 2011, before Warners re-ignited their plans for Justice League, Snyder said this about his Superman and Justice Leagues:  “what they’ll do with Justice League will be its own thing with its own Batman and own Superman.”

Now that Warners have officially announced that Justice League is coming, Snyder would appear to have changed his tune, and while what he recently said to The New York Post  doesn’t exactly give anything away, it is clear the director knows something and that he is being very careful with what he says.

Firstly Snyder was asked about whether there were plans in place to direct more Superman films after Man of Steel: “We approach the film as a single endeavor. There are a lot of gears that have to turn in the world of commerce and the world of the mythology we create to facilitate more adventures for this character. We’ll see what happens.”

Fair enough, not much given away there. However, when pressed about how Man of Steel fits in with Warner Bros. plans for a Justice League movie, Snyder responded: “I don’t know how Justice League is going to be handled. Honestly, I don’t. But Man of Steel exists, and Superman is in it. I don’t know how you’d move forward without acknowledging that.”

So basically he is saying that Warners will have no choice but to link to his film, and when asked about whether his Superman (played by Henry Cavill) would be the same one appearing in Justice League, Snyder carefully said: “Um, how can I answer that? I can’t really say anything to that, because that’s a big spoiler. I will say, yeah, they trust me to keep them on course.”

It’s a careful choice of words, and Snyder’s responses don’t actually give anything away apart from reasons for us to guess there will be links. To be honest, why wouldn’t there be? Man of Steel being the only DC superhero film between now and the release of Justice League, it makes perfect sense to use Man of Steel as a setup for a new franchise, much like Marvel have done with all their Phase One films. There are now rumours that Man of Steel might use a Marvel style teaser at the end of the film to introduce a new villain or, even better, setup the link between Man of Steel and Justice League by introducing the new Batman. Which brings me to our next DC and Warner Bros. story…

Spoilers ahead for The Dark Knight Rises!!!

Those who have not yet seen The Dark Knight Rises had best not read on from here as there will be MAJOR spoilers from here on in…

So far Justice League does not have a director, but a writer has been hired in the form of Will Beal (Gangster Squad). Warner Brothers already have Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy in the bag and finished, and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is due for release 14th June 2013. Warners clearly have to begin building momentum for Justice League, and while there are rumours of a Marvel style teaser at the end of Man of Steel, it is thought that Warners have already begun their setup.

Now, above I have reported on Snyder’s comments about a link between his Superman and the Superman in Justice League, and it appears that Henry Cavill might well be the actor playing Superman for a long while. However, with Christian Bale finished with playing Batman, who will take over from him?

We all saw how The Dark Knight Rises finished, and we now know that Bale and Christopher Nolan are definitely finished with their Batman. Nolan has said he will not direct another superhero film, yet he is staying onboard as writer and producer of Man of Steel. Does this hint at Nolan doing a Joss Whedon and sticking with Warners to oversee future DC superhero films? Well, that remains to be seen, but what we did get at the end of The Dark Knight Rises was a clear indication that Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake just might be picking up Batman’s mantle. We also learned that his legal name was Robin, so fans are now expecting to see Gordon-Levitt take over from Christian Bale.

That ending to The Dark Knight Rises has been rumoured to be the very first link to the Justice League movie, and rumours that Gordon-Levitt will be returning have now taken on a much bigger form thanks to  Motion/Captured. According to their sources, Gordon-Levitt is already in talks to play Batman in the Justice League movie, and while this is strictly rumours for now, they have also reported that plans are in place for Gordon-Levitt to prepare to shoot a scene as a teaser at the end of Man of Steel.

Nothing is yet confirmed, but Gordon-Levitt is the perfect casting choice to take over where Bale left off, and based on the cheers in the cinema where I watched The Dark Knight Rises, it would seem that Batman fans feel the same way. Gordon-Levitt is a terrific actor and would do the Batman proud. However, this is only a rumour for now, but with Man of Steel just seven months away, I would expect much more news and hopefully some confirmation very soon.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
