Marvel President Kevin Feige assures fans ‘Iron Man 3’ will not be as serious as the trailer makes out

Marvel President Kevin Feige has been a busy man recently, and why not? Iron Man 3 is prepping for a 26th April release here in the UK, and after the brilliant trailer, fans are wanting to know more. The trailer hinted at a darker, much more serious Iron Man film than what has come before: gone were the wisecracks, the jokes, the confidence. Instead what we witnessed in the trailer was a broken Tony Stark, and an Iron Man not quite as powerful as his persona may lead him to believe he is. Personally, I was very excited to see Iron Man go down the possible Christopher Nolan root, and a more serious Iron Man movie had me more sold than simply a new Iron Man movie.

However, it would appear that Iron Man 3 will NOT be quite as serious as we initially thought. Speaking to Yahoo Australia, Feige said:

“It’s not a serious movie, but we seriously dig into exploring more of Tony. The trick is just trying to make great movies. We try to make them all great, all different and all fresh. What you’ll see in Iron Man 3 is some very unique directions that were taken.”

Director Shane Black echoed Feige’s comments to  West Australian:

“We’re not aiming for bigger, necessarily. We’re aiming for different and fresh and new. It’s all about capturing that lightning-in-a-bottle feel, about trying to get as much into this as we can. We’re looking to get a ton of thrills into a short space, to make a nice little stew for you.”

So, it would appear that Iron Man 3 might not be as serious as we first thought, and that the jokes and confidence WILL return. However, if Iron Man 3 is set to be Tony Stark return as his usual wisecracking self, you’d think that some other Avenger might also appear in the film since Stark had so much fun in the Avengers Assemble/ I mean, surely Joss Whedon’s superhero masterpiece was simply hinting at bigger and better things to come? Not so, and it sounds like Iron Man 3 is more than happy to go it alone. Speaking more about The Avengers, Feige tells Empire [via CBM]:

Iron Man 3 doesn’t feature any of the other Avengers, or Nick Fury showing up, or any of those world-blending conceits that the Phase One films had. You have to keep in mind that Iron Man 3 had been in the works for almost a year, year and a half before The Avengers was released. We’re sticking to the vision for these films, and showing once again that these characters are just as interesting alone as they are together.”

Robert Downey Jr also confirmed those comments:

“You can dissect why [The Avengers] was the right movie with the right people and the right director at the time. But we feel the same way about Iron Man 3 now.”

While we have no idea who the post-credits sequence will promote, what we do know is that The Mandarin is a very real, and very dangerous enemy of Iron Man. Being the most famous of Tony Stark’s enemies, The Mandarin would have been a very difficult villain to bring to the screen. Feige explained:

“Early – and very late – drafts of IronMan 1 featured The Mandarin as a villain. The Mandarin is his most famous foe in the comics mainly because he’s been around the longest. If you look, there’s not necessarily a definitive Mandarin storyline in the comics. So it was really about having an idea. In terms of the Fu Manchu stereotyping that was involved, we never had any interest in that. He’s relentless. Assuming that he’s the one responsible for what happens to Tony’s house, no other villain has been able to strike that fast and that hard at one of our heroes. He’s very much about believing that the world needs to learn, and he wants to bend the world to his vision”

Empire also got an exclusive new look at Iron Man suit Iron Patriot, which you can see below. Feige said:

“The notion in the movie is that a red, white and blue suit is a bold statement, and it’s meant to be. With Rhodey, he’s very much the foil to Tony’s eccentricities, and in this one you get to see this and be reminded of the trust and friendship between them in that great Shane Black buddy-cop fashion”

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), and Black also co-writes with Drew Pearce. Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Marvel’s The Avengers) as the iconic Super Hero character Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man,Iron Man 2,) as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2) as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Jon Favreau (Iron Man,Iron Man 2) as Happy Hogan. Iron Man 3 continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire inventor/Super Hero, Tony Stark aka “Iron Man.” Sir Ben Kingsley will be playing the role of the villain, The Mandarin, and Guy Pearce will play the role of Aldrich Killian.

Iron Man 3 kicks off Marvel’s Phase Two on 26th April 2013.

Official synopsis:

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
