Following Warner Brothers’ lead with The Dark Knight Rises playing its first few minutes before Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol last year, Paramount are set to do the same this December for their JJ Abrams directed Star Trek Into Darkness.
Only in IMAX can you see the footage though, which does limit where you can see the footage here in the UK, but it is exciting news regardless. Oh, and what film can you see the exclusive footage before? Well, only what could become the years biggest film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey! Neither film really need the advertising push, but this is certainly a very smart pair up of films. There will not be many people on the planet who don’t see Peter Jackson’s epic, and those lucky enough with an IMAX cinema nearby, will see the first nine minutes of JJ Abrams highly anticipated sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. This will give the Star Trek sequel one hell of a boost too.
Abrams shot several sequences of Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX, and the footage will be shown in 3D, the first time ever an extended preview has played in both IMAX and 3D. Star Trek Into Darkness was post converted into 3D, and the only footage we have seen so far is the blink and you’ll miss it three frames shown on the Conan O’Brien show.
Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, said: “Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible.” He continues: “Their use of the IMAX Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike. We’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly-anticipated summer blockbuster.”
The confirmed UK (and Irish)sites so far are the Cineworld IMAX screens in Dublin, Nottingham (those are two new sites opening for The Hobbit), Enfield, Crawley, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Ipswich and Birmingham. But don’t panic! Other cinemas are yet to be confirmed.
While no official synopsis has yet to be revealed, what we do know is who will be appearing in the film: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Anon Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Peter Weller. Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are on writing duties.
Star Trek 2 will arrive in UK cinemas 17th May 2013.
