Synopsis finally revealed for JJ Abrams ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, but what does it tell us?

We all should know by now that director JJ Abrams doesn’t like to give much away, but he does like to tease and get fans talking. He is continuing with this style thanks to the revealing of the official synopsis for his highly anticipated sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.

The synopsis doesn’t tell us who the bad guy is, and simply tells us that Captain Kirk is on a revenge mission to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. It also says about a war-zone world, and also hints that the villain might well be someone from Kirk’s own team. This leads us back to that first image showing Spock fighting with a former member of Star Fleet. Not long after that image emerged, Karl Urban dropped the name Gary Mitchell into a press conference, and here is how we described Mitchell back in July:

Urban was talking about Cumberbatch, and if this is true, then it appears that the big villain for the film will indeed be Gary Mitchell. Mitchell is a character from the original Star Trek series, and after encountering the ‘galactic barrier’ he turned into a powerful and vengeful villain. However, before turning bad, he was a member of Star Fleet and an acquaintance of Kirk. The image suggests the same, and it could well be that Gary Mitchell is the villain.

Now, writer Roberto Orci denied Gary Mitchell was the villain Benedict Cumberbatch is playing, but with the description of that character, and the official synopsis stating  “they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization”, surely this is all the indication we need as to who the villain is? Speculate is all we can do for now.

Star Trek Into Darkness is directed by JJ Abrams, and the cast includes  Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Anon Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Peter Weller. Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are on writing duties.

Star Trek 2 will arrive in UK cinemas 17th May 2013.

The official synopsis:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
