Epic and thrilling first trailer lands for Joseph Kosinski’s ‘Oblivion’ starring Tom Cruise

Things are hotting up on Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s epic new sci-fi, Oblivion. The first poster landed just days ago, and now the first full length trailer has arrived to give us our very first look at the film, and it’s good!

The film stars Tom Cruise as Jack Harper who is one of Earth’s last few remaining humans, or so he thought. His job is drone repairs, and once finished he will be able to leave and go and live with the rest of the humans who left Earth after it was destroyed. However, saving a mysterious woman (played by the beautiful Olga Kurylenko) and discovering humans still living on Earth (led by a brilliant looking Morgan Freeman), a chain of events are set in motion that will change everything.

From the trailer it is clear this is a big film, and Kosinski proved with Tron: Legacy he can do the special effects stuff well. However, it would appear that Oblivion also relies on strong characters and an intriguing story, so hopefully the director can bring all these elements together and give us something very special. Tron: Legacy had its flaws, and even thoguh it made lots of money, Disney passed on working with Kosinski again on Oblivion. Instead Universal picked it up, and with a release date of 12th April here in the UK, it is clear Universal believe in this film and are aiming for the Easter holidays to get the most out of this film.

I think it look awesome, and the trailer manages to hold back giving too much away. Cruise, Freeman and Kurylenko all appear perfect casting choices, with Freeman still looking ultra cool at such an age. The epic scale and scope of the film looks wonderful, and special effects flawless and I am desperate to find out who the hell that monster is that appears every now and then. Oblivion, on the evidence of this first trailer, looks good!

Joseph Kosinski directs from a screenplay written by William Monahan, Karl Gajdusek, Michael Arndt. The film is based on the comic written by Joseph Kosinski and Arvid Nelson. The film is produced by Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Barry Levine, Duncan Henderson, Joseph Kosinski and executive produced by Dave Morrison, Jesse Berger.

The cast includes Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo.

Synopsis:

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.  Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion will be shot in stunning digital 4K resolution on location across the United States and Iceland.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
