JJ Abrams and Benedict Cumberbatch discuss the villain in ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

As we all continue to speculate as to who the hell Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing in JJ Abrams sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, along comes Abrams with all sorts of information which add to to all sorts of nothing. The director is very clever with his words, and in an interview with GyaO (via TrekMovie) Abrams went into some detail about the new films villain, but manages to not give anything away:

“So this movie doesn’t require you [to] have seen the first movie. The characters are a group of people who have recently come together and find themselves up against this incredibly terrifying force. His name is John Harrison and he is sort of an average – that is what makes him so scary – he is just an average guy who works in an organization called Starfleet, and he turns against the group because he has got this back-story and this kind of amazing secret agenda.

After two very violent attacks, one in London and one in the US, our characters have to go after this guy and apprehend him. And it is a far more complicated and difficult thing then they ever anticipated. ‘Into Darkness’ is very much about how intense it gets and really what they are up against.”

So all we can gather from that is that the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness will indeed be a real nasty piece of work, and will cause a lot of problems for Kirk and his crew. We are still playing the guessing game as to who the villain will actually be, with many claiming the name John Harrison is a fake name to put people off guessing. However, whatever his name is, he is likely to be a real intense villain who should be a lot of fun on screen.

Benedict Cumberbatch also spoke of preparing for his role and what Abrams expected from him, here is what he said:

“When J.J. described the role to me … he described someone who was, in movie terms, a mixture of Hannibal Lecter, Jack in The Shining, and the Joker in Batman,” Cumberbatch said. “He’s someone who has enormous physical strength. He’s someone who is incredibly dangerous, both as a physical entity and through the use of various technologies and weapons and who performs acts of what I would describe as terrorism. He’s also a psychological master. He manipulates the minds of those around him to do his bidding in a very, very subtle way.”

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
