2013 has already seen horror top the US box office in its first weekend with Texas Chainsaw 3D slicing up the competition, and now just three weeks later, the Guillermo del Toro produced Mama has put horror back on top.

This has been a tremendous start to the year for our beloved genre, and with so much good stuff due for release throughout the year, things are certainly looking up. Mama, starring Jessica Chastain, managed to fend off competition from Zero Dark Thirty (also starring Jessica Chastain), Lincoln and newcomers The Last Stand and Broken City.

Mama ended the weekend on a respectful $33 million, almost doubling its nearest competitor Zero Dark Thirty ($18.7 million). This is a great result for horror, and better still it shows a massive improvement on last year when The Woman in Black was released a roughly the same time. The weekend on February 3rd saw the Daniel Radcliffe starring Woman in Black open in top place with $20.8 million in the US, while Mama has topped that by $12 million, proof that horror fans don’t always need blood and guts as a reason to buy tickets, and also proof that horror is proving bigger this year than last year.

These results are very encouraging. Here is the full list of this weekends US box office figures:

Directed by Andres Muschietti, executive produced by Guillermo del Toro and starring Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier and Daniel Kash, Mama will arrive in UK cinemas on 22nd February 2013.

Synopsis:

Guillermo del Toro presents ‘Mama,’ a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their mother was murdered. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.

The day their father killed their mother, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished near their suburban neighborhood. For five long years, their Uncle Lucas and his girlfriend, Annabel, have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home.

As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all by themselves? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
