Today is a good day for fans of Tom Six’s The Human Centipede trilogy. Almost a year ago production on the third and final film in the trilogy, The Human Centipede: Final Sequence, was halted after a fall out between director Six and star of the first film, Dieter Laser. It was reported that Laser was not happy with the script, and after reading it at the last minute, demanded changes or he would walk. Six was going to take legal action and sue Laser because he was breaking his contract.
Tom Six’s sister and the film producer Ilona Six issued a statement last year saying: “Because of the success of The Human Centipede, it seems that Mr Dieter Laser’s ego has grown to laughably big proportions. First signing the contract and rating the THC3 script as fantastic, and then demanding his own unacceptable script changes, and now refusing to play the part only seven weeks prior to shooting”
It all got a bit messy, with Dieter releasing his own statement: “It’s very simple: I loved the story when it was told, got the contract and the promise to have the script in 4 to 6 weeks. When it arrived – half a year later and only after the official announcement – I didn’t like the realization at all, couldn’t identify with the character the way it was written and developed immediately and enthusiastically in a day and night marathon a version full of concrete and practical suggestions which would enable me to play the lead full throttle – same procedure as with Dr. Heiter – but this time it also would have had some unavoidable effects to the dramatic structure. That was too much for Tom and since he couldn’t live with my suggestions and I as a method actor couldn’t identify with his version, I told him that I couldn’t see any other way than that he would have to ‘change horses’. That’s it.”
However, almost a year on both director and star have settled their differences, no legal action has been taken, and The Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence can indeed start moving ahead. The film is expected to begin filming in May.
However, there are some changes to the characters. Both Laser, who starred in the first film, and Laurence R Harvey (star of part two) will be returning to play leading roles, but these roles will be different to what they have played before. The pair will play “a new, villainous duo with a storyline no one will expect”, said Ilona Six. She also confirmed the rumours of a 500 person centipede appearing in the film, and said this rumour was indeed true. She also said that a big American celebrity would be appearing in the film, but would not say who.
“I know my Human Centipede 3 will be very politically incorrect, but I didn’t want to change anything in the script,” said Tom Six in a statement. “I am very happy Dieter will follow my vision for a full 100% now and know he is absolutely the most brilliant actor I could wish for.”
Laser also commented: “I never ever would have thought that all our differences and misunderstandings would in the end lead to an even deeper and warmer understanding and appreciation of each other. In this regard I am actually thankful about the whole fuss because it turned out to be an advantage and a wonderful present for our film and for our friendship.”
