Disney confirms ‘Star Wars’ spin-off’s to be made, although will not confirm which characters get the special treatment

Just yesterday the rumours were building around a possible Star Wars spin-ff based on Yoda, and while today’s news does indeed confirm that Disney WILL be making some stand-alone films, we are no closer to knowing who exactly these films will focus on.

We heard rumours months ago that not only would Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan and Sherlock Holmes writer Simon Kinberg be working on Episode VII, but the pair would also be involved, and possibly being the main writers on some spin-off movies. Now, Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that there will be spin-offs which will be made while Star Wars Episodes VII, VIII and IX are also made.

Iger says that Disney plan on releasing Episode VII in 2015, with the next two films arriving three years apart, and the spin-off’s would also be made during this time. He would not comment on who the spin-off movie’s would focus on, and said that would be left to Lucasfilm and those involved to announce when they are good a ready.

Here is a brief paragraph of what Iger had to say, and be sure to check out the video at the bottom which shows the entire interview.

“I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from greatStar Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to makeStar Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too”

So, the big question now is just who these stand-alone films would focus on. As reported yesterday, there are already rumours of a film based on Yoda, while Zack Snyder announced some time ago his interest in making a Han Solo themed film. There have also been rumours of a Jabba the Hutt spin-off. I would imagine top of everyone’s list is Boba Fett, but we are going to have to wait a little while longer to find out who it will be.

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
