Justice League is currently on hold at Warners, and information on the development of the film seems to have halted, for now. However, Guillermo del Toro is pressing forward with his version of the other Justice League, the one with the supernatural heroes which has been going by many different names over the months. Heaven Sent, Dark Universe and now Justice League Dark are the names already flying around. Justice League Dark is the latest title, which refers to the title of the actual comic book.
Del Toro recently spoke with Total Film, and he said he was prepping to pitch his idea for the story to DC and Warners: “I am going to be presenting my storyline to DC and Warners of where I want to take this universe. We do have a writer, but until that is firmed up, I have to keep it a secret. I hope it happens” he said.
Just over a month ago Del Toro gave an update about Justice League Dark and said he had found the “perfect” writer, but had to keep it secret. He also gave a bit of history between the roster of characters and himself:
”That roster, you’re talking about my childhood,” del Toro said. “Swamp Thing, for me, is a rock star. Demon, the Jack Kirby Demon, Etrigan, is amazing. And then you go to Constantine, who I thought was an amazing creation. I want to do the Constantine of the comics. Deadman… it’s really a lot of work but a lot of fun.”
Talking to Total Film this week, del Toro again talked about his love of the story and its characters:
“It’s going really really well. It’s like meeting old friends. I grew up with Demon Etrigan, with Swamp Thing, with Deadman, so these are characters that are near and dear to my heart.”
“I’d love to use the origins that are proper to each character. I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight…. I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Dead Man mythology, the Alex Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well, and to dig.”
Whether del Toro’s pitch works we will just have to wait and see, but even if this does get green-lit, he has a massive number of projects on the go right now, including Pacific Rim 2, Crimson Peak, Pinocchio and TV series’ The Strain and The Incredible Hulk. Del Toro likes to keep himself busy, and should Justice League Dark get the go ahead, it could be years before it actually gets made.
