As the Star Wars rumours continue to build and build, and generally there seems to be a lot of secrecy involved, one person has confirmed there appearance in the new film. Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original trilogy, has confirmed here involvement during an interview with Palm Beech Illustrated.
Now, considering JJ Abrams is directing, and that he is the master of secrecy, these comments by Fisher seem to be totally different to the way the film is being built up. Right now there is a lot of things going on that we simply do not know about, and Abrams and Disney are only letting on what they want us to know. So, Fisher’s comments may have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Here is what she said:
Question: “Disney is going to continue the Star Wars saga, producing movies set to hit theaters starting in 2015. Can you confirm whether you’ll reprise the role of Princess Leia?”
Blunt and to the point indeed, and no beating around the bush at all. However, back in November Fisher also confirmed her involvement in the new film, only to later say she merely mentioned it in jest. Whether she has now done this twice remains to be seen, and hopeful fans (including myself) will be hoping she hasn’t and that this news is true. We will have to wait for a press release for confirmation.
However, during the interview, Fisher also joked about Leia as an older person:
“[She’s] elderly. She’s in an intergalactic old folks’ home,” laughed Fisher. “I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.”
Now, the following statement I see as a joke and not to be taken seriously (in fact, I feel the same about the above statement!), but Fisher spoke of Leia still dressing like she did in Star Wars:
“[She’s still wearing] the bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome,” said Fisher. “At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalized.”
This sounds more and more like Fisher is simply enjoying the attention and having some fun with it. I wouldn’t take any of this seriously until official confirmation is released. However, like many other fans, I really hope that Fisher’s involvement is true. Not too sure about the bikini and old people’s home nonsense though…
As expected, it turns out the Carrie Fisher’s comments were indeed a joke. CNN received a statement from Fisher’s representatives who said “She was joking. Nothing has been announced,”
