Directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, the Evil Dead remake had its world premiere at SXSW Film Festival on Friday, and so far reports are that the horror is very good for those looking for some gorey, nasty fun. Whether it lives up to the promise of being “the most terrifying film you will ever experience” remains to be seen, but early word of mouth has been mostly positive.
The film seems to have really pleased the gore hounds, but the less easy to please sound like they were looking for a bit more from the film. Shock Till You Drop managing editor Tweeted the following:
What I’m getting: Tepid reaction to Evil Dead from the more discriminating; enthusiastic response from those looking for gory good time.
Two more reactions, one from Aint It Cool News and another from Slash Film were varied in their thoughts:
EVIL DEAD is absolutely orgasmic, it will make you bleed out various orifices profusely and you’ll love it!!!!
If you’re looking for gore and/or fan service, EVIL DEAD has it. If you want anything else, there are nice DVDs of the original movies.
However, good or bad, there are already plans in place for a sequel, and during a Q&A at SXSW, director Fede Alvarez confirmed he and writer Rodo Sayagues had “started writing Evil Dead 2”. That was all the information he would give, however Bloody Disgusting caught up with Sayagues at SXSW, and cornered him for an interview. The site will be posting their interview later this week, however they did share some key questions and answers they got from the Evil Dead writer about their plans for Evil Dead 2.
Last night you sort of announced a sequel, what can you share about that?
Fede and I are writing that now. We are in a very preliminary phase of that project, but yes we’re working on it. And it’s not gonna be a remake of the second Evil Dead. It’s going to directly follow this one and is going to be a whole different story.
So you don’t see the tone changing like it changed between the 1981 film and the 1987 film?
I think it’s going to be more like the second half of this film. It’s going to be more over the top. The escalation is going to continue.
Are we going to see Mia [Jane Levy] in it?
Oh we’re definitely going to see Mia!
So Jane Levy can look forward to more punishment then?
Oh yes! A lot more!
Directed by Fede Alvarez, Evil Dead has been written by Alvarez, Sam Raimi, Rodo Sayagues and Diablo Cody. Jane Levy (“Suburgatory”) as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia; and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie all appear, and Bruce Campbell is also onboard as a producer with Sam Raimi.
The Evil Dead is due to arrive in UK cinemas 12th April 2013.
In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
