The Tommy Wirkola directed action/horror/comedy/fantasy romp, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D has received some awful reviews, and was considered somewhat of a flop in the US. Starring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, reports are saying that the film cost around $50 million to make, but only went on to gross a sorry $54.6 million in the US.
Personally, I don’t understand the bad press, and I thoroughly enjoyed the film for what it was, and you can read my review here. Apparently the rest of the world felt the same, and the film passed the $200 million worldwide total gross this weekend after taking a rather healthy $150 million outside of the US. This basically means the film is a success, and has made Paramount some $150 million, so anyone questioning the need for a sequel should read the figures.
Whether a sequel will be welcomed is another story, however based on fact, a good number of fans would want one, I know I would. Now, while Paramount have announced the sequel as “officially in development”, it still does not exactly guarantee the film will be made until things come together.
For now there is no word as to whether director Wirkola will return, and right now he is back in his native Norway beginning work on his highly anticipated horror sequel, Dead Snow 2. As for Arterton and Renner, again there is no confirmation as yet if they will return, but reports are guessing that they could be tied into a contract. And to be fair, what would be the point in making a sequel without them in it? I will be keeping my fingers crossed that this sequel does happen.
