Director Matt Reeves’ sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is starting to cast up nicely. Andy Serkis was always returning to play Caesar, and a few weeks ago Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke was added to the cast. Shortly after Let Me In’s Kodi-Smit McPhee was announced as joining the cast, and last week came the very exciting news that Gary Oldman had signed on.
Today it has been announced that Keri Russell (who appears in upcoming horror Dark Skies) is the latest name to be added to the ever growing list of credible actors. Again it is not known exactly who Russell will be playing, but assumptions are that she will be playing the female lead.
While no plot details or even character descriptions have yet been revealed, speculation is saying that Clarke will play the leader of a group of scientists working to stop the Apes. The only character to actually have any details revealed is that of Gary Oldman: he will be playing the role of Dreyfus, leader of the human resistance after the apes have taken power.
Reports are saying that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place 15 years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was directed by Rupert Wyatt and starred James Franco. One of the focuses of the new film will be a group of scientists struggling to survive now that the Apes have taken over, and another story will focus on how Caesar is having a few issues remaining as leader of the Apes.
Fox has set the film for release on May 23, 2014.
