Peter Jackson can now celebrate a superb achievement as his return to Middle Earth, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has become the fifteenth film in history to pass the $1 billion mark. After all the turbulence of the bad press of his 48 FPS filming, the animal cruelty accusations, the slow start and everything else that was thrown at Jackson and his crew, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been a huge success, and is still playing in some cinemas.

The film joined the ranks with fourteen other films after a very strong opening in China ten days ago pushed its total gross to $1.1 billion worldwide. In China, so far the film has taken $37.3 million.

In a statement announcing the news on Sunday, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution for Warner Bros. said “From Berlin to Beijing, it is so gratifying to see how the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been such an event with audiences around the world. We know that moviegoers everywhere are already excited about the next film, as are we.”

So here is the new list of top grossing films of all time:

A keen enthusiast and collector of all horror and extreme films. I can be picky as i like quality in my horror. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a classic, but as long as it has something to impress me then i'm a fan. I watch films by the rule that if it doesn't bring out some kind of emotive response then it aint worth watching.
