Entertainment Weekly published the very first image (above) from the LOOOONG in development flick, R.I.P.D, and proves that the film has not been forgotten. Announced over two years ago with casting updates, it feels like the film has been in development forever, and in a way it has.
It was nearly two years ago that we reported that Kevin Bacon had joined the cast and, to my knowledge, that was the last we heard of the ‘dead police officers’ adaptation. Today comes proof that the film is still actually happening, and reports are claiming the film is gearing up for a July release.
The image simply shows stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds pointing their rather cool looking guns, no doubt at a bad guy. While it doesn’t show much, it is enough for me to make me believe that the film is still on its way.
The Dark Horse Comics adaptation is directed by Robert Schwentke (Red, Flightplan) and the cast includes Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Mary-Louise Parker, Marisa Miller, Mike O’Malley, James Hong, Tobias Segal, and Robert Knepper.
Here’s the synopsis:
Welcome to the Rest in Peace Department–the devoted, yet dead, officers of divine law enforcement “patrolling the deadbeat … reporting to one boss.” Yep–THAT boss. Nick Cruz died an untimely death at the height of his personal and professional life. Why did he join the R.I.P.D.? Well, not knowing the identity of his killer has left his soul a bit … restless. Now he hunts some of the most fiendish creatures, hoping for the chance to find out who set him up so he can get into heaven.
