We were teased during the closing credits of The Avengers about Marvel super villain Thanos, and his possible involvement in the next Phase of Marvel’s movies. Phase Two has now officially kicked off here in the UK, and while we are still no closer to knowing exactly where Thanos will fit in, The Avengers director ( Marvel/Disney overall God) Joss Whedon did offer up a small hint of what he has planned for the villain.
Speaking with DesdeHollywood, Whedon offered the following hints at how Thanos is part of the overall plan:
“Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful, he is not someone you can just trot out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I’ve got going on. The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful, but they’re not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.”
This is all speculation for now, but early reports have been saying that Thanos will turn up in Guardians of the Galaxy as the main villain, but Whedon’s words there suggest otherwise. Besides, reports are now saying that the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy will now be The Collector, played by Lee Pace. So what does this mean for Thanos?
Many sites are saying that it is believed Thanos will gradually begin creeping into Marvel’s Phase Two by controlling other villains. It is thought that for now, Thanos will be a sort of background character controlling things from a distance, and based on what Whedon has said, he might not even begin appearing until The Avengers 2. The “big finale” I would think is The Avengers 3, so I would expect the super villain to start building a presence as the films go on. Whether he shows his face soon or not, Thanos will definitely be the villain at the centre of all the bad stuff as we move into Phase Three!
