With Oblivion doing some strong business here in the UK this week, and due for release in the US this weekend, it would appear that Tom Cruise is well suited to the sci-fi genre. With films like War of the Worlds, Minority Report and Vanilla Sky released over the years, and the now completed All You Need Is Kill due for release next year, Cruise has clearly found his home with sci-fi. He is now set to return to the genre with an adaptation of a series of Japanese sci-fi novels written by Chohei Kambayashi.
Deadline is reporting that Cruise has signed on to star in the adaptation called Yukikaze for Warner Brothers. The author, Kambayashi, has been called Japan’s answer to Isaac Asimov. The film will be produced by 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally, who developed and produced the sci-fi film All You Need Is Kill that Cruise starred in for Warner Bros and director Doug Liman. Viz Media’s Jason Hoffs will also be producing.
Per Deadline: Yukikaze unfolds in the early 21st Century, three decades after the alien force JAM invaded earth through a dimensional porthole that appeared over Antarctica. While humans beat back the attack, they form a special combat force to eradicate the alien threat on its home planet.
Cruise would play a second lieutenant who is tasked with heading into enemy territory—the alien home planet Fairy—and gathering information that can bring an end to the war once and for all.
Here’s the synopsis for Yukikaze, courtesy of Amazon:
More than thirty years ago, a hyper-dimensional passageway suddenly appeared over the continent of Antarctica. Fighters from the mysterious alien force known as the JAM poured through the passage, the first wave an attempted terrestrial invasion. Their ferocity was unquestionable, their aim unknown. Humanity, united by a common enemy, managed to repel the invaders, chasing them back through the passageway to the strange planet nicknamed “Fairy.”
The task of finishing the battle was given to the newly formed FAF, a combat force created to go to Fairy and eliminate the JAM bases once and for all. Now, in the midst of a war with no end in sight, Second Lieutenant Rei Fukai carries out his missions in the skies over Fairy. Attached to Tactical Combat and Surveillance Unit 3 of the Special Air Force, his duty is to gather information on the enemy and bring it back to base—no matter the human cost. His only constant companion in this lonely task is his fighter plane, the sentient FFR-31 Super Sylph, call sign: Yukikaze.
